Near Tragedy on Metra
Author: kevink

2 kids from an area high school were almost hit by a Metra train last week at Western Springs on the BNSF Chicago Sub. Local media filed an FOIA request for on board video from Metra. The video is taken from the westbound train as it departs.

You Can't fix stupid!  Living in the area, knowing there are many trains and yet you disreguard the crossing protection, slowley walk accross the tracks without even looking for a train.  What can we do to stop this?  Parents do need to take an active role in this.

This one was of my concerns when my kid took the train for a few years and I always reminded them about being safe aroung the tracks. Now that kid  is a senior at Fenwick and drives so I always remind them about road safety especially with the winter weathre. According to my kid, the involved students had been downplaying the incident after the first news story came out the week before last. Wonder what they'll have to say after their parents see the video?

And FWIW, it's not just kids. I see this behavior from adults ALL the time at my Metra stop.

Of course they are downplaying it. They are invincible. Just ask them.

It's been a long time, but I used to regularly watch some go over the inter-track fence at La Grange Road. It wasn't easy. It would have taken less time to walk up to the crossing at Ashland. I managed to avoid it, but I knew a guy waiting for an east man who watched one get hit doing that.
