Is there a secure place to leave baggage while on layover there? Asking for a friend.

I've left bags for a few hours at the Checked Baggage area to the left of the entry tunnel/food plaza area. As long as you're scheduled for a train and can show a ticket, I believe it was either free or just a few bucks. They'll give you a baggage check tag.

If you're traveling sleeping car class, there is a first class lounge on the second floor with stairs and elevator to the right of the Amtrak ticket agents. You can check your bag there if you show your ticket.

Metro lounge in LA is also available to Business Class passengers on the Surfliners/Coast Starlight.

The day of the free bag storage is gone.  I think Amtrak charges $10 per bag for ticketed passengers per day.  Like $25 for non-ticketed.    Try the Bike Hub store just north of the station.  I think they are cheaper.
