Passenger Trains > 14 Coming and Going @ GaviotaDate: 02/16/19 16:51 14 Coming and Going @ Gaviota Author: suvart Yesterday was grey and rainy, and tomorrow will be as well. So I took today's sunny skies as an opportunity to grab some shots of 14 crossing the Gaviota trestle. I went for what I call "the classic ledge shot", which are shots of WB's that are taken from the cliff edge adjacent to the west end of the bridge, only this time I cheated and used a drone.
1) 14 crosses the Gaviota trestle, the spot for "the classic ledge shot" is visible in the bottom right. I wonder how much longer before the trestle needs to be replaced, given that it's over 100 years old. 2) 14 heads towards some of the most restrictive coastline in the world. If you go any futher north you approach the Hollister ranch area, an area exclusive to the wealthy. A gate with a guard will turn you around if you try to venture in. After that you hit Vandenberg AFB, and I don't imagine launching a drone would end well there. Edit: Uploading these from a campsite, so I have no idea if the pixelated images are a result of a poor internet connection during the upload and that's how they look for everyone, or if it's just my connection making them look pixelated on my screen. SR What's with all the cars up on the road into Hollister? Surfing? Date: 02/16/19 17:18 Re: 14 Coming and Going @ Gaviota Author: photobob The shots look just fine. You have to love that lighting.

Between storms this is the most beautiful weather along the coast. Note the bedding planes for the rock strata: dipping about 45 degrees down to the sea. This means when the waves erode some rock everything above it has an easy slide down to the ocean. A few of those bedding planes have thin layers of slippery mud and in wet years they become lubricated. And this is a wet year. Stay tuned. Thanks for nothing Propeller-head!

Put in perspective: The Coast Route is, I think, 115 yrs old. The reign of the celebrated PPC was only about 20 of those years. Never again? Um, really? I think there’s a hiking trail that starts up the hills from there. Dave Date: 02/17/19 18:28 Re: 14 Coming and Going @ Gaviota Author: atsf121 Excellent photos. I’ve never stopped for photos at Gaviota, but when drones came out, that was the first place I thought of that a drone could really make a difference with.
