Ocean View getting cut up?
Author: MH2198

Hearing rumors the Amtrak Ocean View full dome is heading westbound on #49 tonight to be scrapped. Can anyone confirm/deny?

Same rumor in the Chicago area. Supposedly viewed same way as Starlight parlor cars, " unnecessary expense".??

I am sure one of the class one roads would love to have it for their private car fleet even if they already have one.

WHY would any sane individual decide to scrap such a valuable item of history?
Such railcars are in servicable condition based upon regular maintenance.  The next thing that should be identified is if Anderson is planning to end private railcar services.

Norfolk Southern might like to have another full dome to join ex-AT&SF #552 in their fleet. I used to work that car when it was based at St. Louis Union Station ages ago. Sell it to a class one , be done with the car and let it continue to run.

I'm sure BNSF would know exactly what to do with it.

An absolutely beautiful car that is enormously expensive to maintain, limited parts availability, outdated, and unfortunately has reached the end of its useful life for regular rail service.

I think it would be cheaper and just as an effective marketing tool for Amtrak or NYS-DOT to lease a VIA Rail Coffee Shop dome car for a couple of months in the autumn for the Adirondack. Let VIA deal with the long term mainteance issues.

Are there still 2 SLRG Dome cars sitting in Saratoga ? Could NYS-DOT condemn them and make one good car out of them ?

So have all VIA Budd's reached the end of their useful serviceable life? They were built during the same time frame and are in regular use on several VIA trains.

Very well said.  The best thing for this car’s long-term future would be as part of a Class I’s office car fleet where its use would be limited and it’s maintenance budget generous.

I can’t possibly imagine that it would be “cut up”.

Pardon my angst, but who gives a damn about "the cost" and who died and left a bean counter to decide that this railcar has reached the end of its useful life for regular rail service?  As if someone can't discern a worthwhile investment in American History and PR value?  NOT ONE INVESTOR can afford to buy the car and carry on MX by sourcing new/rebuilt parts?  Please.

There's an Executive VP who's enormously expensive to maintain, limited brain capacity, outdated, and unfortunately has reached the end of his useful life as a regular executive for America's Railroad.

"Useful life" is an accounting term based on arbitrary depreciation schedules. I place little credibility in the term - you run what you have. Korrider Kid Gardner doesn't want oddities on the roster, has no use for marketing, nor understands revenue, especially when the car is now isolated to state-supported routes for which Amtrak has no financial stake in, yet stuck with unique maintenance issues whose costs don't charge-back to those states.

Do note that NEC-only ex-Metroliner business cars "Catenary inspection" (10005 ?) and the Conference car are not on the chopping block, at least not now. Hand the NEC over to Airnet-21, and see what happens then.

Furthermore, the car is not in "regular service". If it were still towing the line back and forth between Chicago and Seattle or LA every 5 days, that would be different. It maybe be troublesome to find truck and HVAC parts, so there could be a less disruptive solution as I stated above.
