Passenger Trains > New Orleans loses all passenger train service today

New Orleans, LA has no passenger trains today.

The Sunset Limited turned short at Houston, account flooding.

The City of New Orleans turned short at Jackson, account flooding.

NS put a freight on the ground near Lumberton, MS, possible washout.

Scratch the Crescent; 19(10) turned short at Birmingham and 20(11) was cancelled out of NOL.

This has happened since Katrina some number of times ?

When your city is below sea level and it's raining this is going to happen.
A couple of the closures are because they closed the flood gates which go across the tracks.

Hoboken is below sea level too. During Superstorm Sandy, it became an island. Hyrologists believe with rising sea levels, there will be that occurance at every high tide in about 60 - 80 years. 

That makes for a mess though!

19(11) is also planned to turn short to 20(12) at Birmingham, and Crescent passengers will be bustituted, New Orleans-Birmingham.

Actually, 58 and 59 are still running to and from New Orleans, with crew only.
58 just passing Hammond as this is typed.  They are not making any station stops, which is rather freaky to be at the depot and watch it streak by.
Passengers are being bussed between NOL and JAN.
This was what they did earlier in the year on the first opening of the spillway.
But, it is subject to change if safety conditions on the trestle warrant.
I cannot think of any time since Katrina that all services were cancelled other than maybe for a day or two when a major hurricane was threatening the city.
Gustav was one of those.
CN is the first to shut down, because of a flood gate near the Louis Armstrong airport (Formerly Known as Moisant, and still known as MSY).
CN also gets hit when there are high tides in the big curve along the west edge of Lake Ponchartrain.
Sunset Limited is typically not affected much by high water, since it uses the Huey P. Long bridge to get across the river to Avondale.
It is more subject to water-related or bridge malfunction disruptions elsewhere across southern Louisiana and in the Beaumont, Texas to Houston area (as currently).
Crescent seldom gets hammered by high water, but high winds will put a damper on the NS since it has an exposed over-water trestle between Gentilly and Slidell.

Crescent might make it tomorrow...NS expects open track late tonight:
