All I can think of is that perhaps a switch was stuck, or there was a broken rail on the intended route.

Or maybe Anderson sent a bustitution for the SW Chief and its driver got lost.

I suppose a possibility as there is a 4000 ft. passing track at Caddoa (MP 521.5).
