AEM7 motors arrive in Emeryville
Author: WP17

A 7 hour late California Zephyr arrived in Emeryville late Friday evening with two AEM7 electric motors in tow. These units are destined for testing the new catenary that CalTrain is installing on their peninsula commute line. I headed down to Emeryville to welcome the units to the west coast and to get my attempt at very low light high ISO photography. Here is a small set of what I shot. Note that Amtrak markings have . been removed from the units although their Amtrak numbers remain big and visible.

They should look pretty good with the big red meatball on their sides.

Great photos!!!

A question or two.

Are these units operable?  If so will they be under power when testing or is the plan only to test the catenary?

Thanks.

Units are most definitely operable.  They received a major Amtrak rebuild in Chicago before coming west.  No idea on testing plans yet.

In Chicago? Do you mean the Wilmington Shops? My understanding is they just passed through Chicago. The electric fleet is maintained out of Wilmington and Bear, Delaware. Just curious......

They were rebuilt in Wilmington, I’ve seen photos of the work being done. Chicago would have no idea what to do with an AEM-7.

True; my bad. I knew they'd gotten the rebuild, and should have questioned the source who said it was done in Chicago. Makes no sense now that I think about it.  Apologies!

It would be fun seeing one of these hauling a revenue consist of tri-level or gallery cars on a regular SF - San Jose run.
If they were ever short of cab cars, they could use one of these, even now.
