California Siemens Charger Locomotives

Have all the California Chargers been delivered?

Any P42s or P59s still being used on the Pacific Surfliners?

How about on the Capitals or San Joaquins?

At least on the San Joaquin’s you are just as likely to see a Charger, F59 or P42 on a given day. I suspect the Capitols run about the same, with whatever is serviceable that day.

I think all the Surfliner F59’s are gone (to METRA). I caught a northbound Surfliner at Pismo with a Charger this afternoon.

The San Joaquin and Capitol trains weren’t about replacing the F59s. It was about getting the Amtrak P42s and the P32s off of the trains.

Well, the F59's were returned to their owner at the end of their leases. So the Chargers are replacing them since the F59's aren't around anymore.
Amtrak would like to get the P32's and P42's off the San Joaquins and the Capitols but that hasn't happened yet.

I haven’t seen it mentioned here on TO, but a Charger wearing the Northern California CDTX motif was spotted going south on number 11 on Sunday.

I’m not sure what it’s doing down south, but heads up.

This is true of SoCal but not Norhtern CA (San Joaquins and Capitols) where the F59s are owned by CA and not Amtrak, have been rebuilt and are not up for replacement. They may want to replace the P42s in NorCal and seem to be using them less often, but they still pinch hit as needed and probably will for a while, maybe until Amtrak Chargers arrive.

2107 and 2108 are equipped to run in ATS territory on the San Diego section. Two Chargers have been out of service in So Cal with collision damage, and either 2107 or 2108 is going South to relieve some of the pressure caused by the two units out with collision damage.

Thanks for the info.

It was the 2018 that went south on Sunday.

=============================================

Note that no "Amtrak Chargers" are yet coming to corridor trains in the State of California.
Those Chargers that are destined to appear in the next year or so are owned by CalTrans
and not by Amtrak.

Amtrak's order of seventy-five Chargers for long distance trains is not scheduled for delivery until 2021;
by that time, if Delta Dick Anderson has his way, will there be any long distance trains left?

If what I read was correct all of the CalTrans owned Chargers are wired for ATS. They just need the hardware to be installed to work ATS territory.

Not correct. The 2101-2106 are not wired for ATS equipment, and therefore limited to service in Northern California.  Unless 2101-2106 are either updated for ATS operation, or ATS Operation is discontinued on the San Diego leg of the Surfliner Route, they will run only on the Capital and San Joaquin corridors.

Typically there is one P42 assigned to Capitol Corridor, one to San Joaquin, and one on standby at Oakland.
One is generally either at LAX or SAN for Surfline.
This current count is way down from previously, when there were often 10 or more GE's on loan to the Joint Power Boards in California.
