Passenger Trains > Raleigh, NC High Speed Passenger Action

In Raleigh, NC, from CP Boylan at CSX milepost 157.3 to  Fetner, milepost 164.8, CSX’s Aberdeen Subdivision and Norfolk Southern’s H-Line share a double track, CTC controlled, 79 mph mainline that hosts ten passenger trains per day along with several freights from each railroad.  Here is some action from this morning:

1.  Amtrak 92, the Silver Star meets Amtrak/NCDOT 75, the Piedmont, at the Royal Street crossing, milepost 159.2.
2.  Amtrak 80, the Carolinian, passes the NC State Fairgrounds.

The Aberdeen Subdivision was formerly part of the Seaboard Air Line’s mainline from Richmond to Raleigh, Hamlet, Columbia and southward.  The NS H-Line is leased from the North Carolina Railroad and is part of NS’s mainline from Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh and eastward to Morehead City, NC.

That New Sleeping Car on Silver Star Amtrak 92.

Did you anticipate the meet in video #1 or dumb luck?  It certainly is high speed action.

It was calculated good luck.  Per Amtrak’s website, I knew when 92 departed Cary (just west of Fetner) and when 75 departed Raleigh Union Station.  The meet was a nice bonus.  75 met 80 at Fetner.  

Well, I wouldn't say 79 mph is high speed as the term is generally used, but it's fast compared to most other trackage in North Carolina.

The NS mileposts for Boylan and Fetner are H80.9 and H73.1. There are both NS and CSX mileposts. Of the paired double track that runs east-west in terms of a compass, the track on the north is CSX and the track on the south is NS. This distinction used to make a difference because NS was welded rail and CSX was jointed rail, and the tracks were ABS with directional running. The CSX track would knock fillings out of your teeth. But NCDOT had the CSX rail replaced with welded, and now each track is signaled for both directions. The tracks are dispatched by CSX, but since CSX operates only one local freight each way over the line, there's no issue with CSX priortizing their trains.

It is the 62043 with a new stripe kit. Not a new sleeper.
