Passenger Trains > Service to Green Bay

With the success of the Chicago - Milwaukee service has there ever been an interest of restoring service to Green Bay?   I know there has not been a schedule Green Bay train since Amtrak Day 5/1/1971.

Given that Amtrak would require most of the funding to come from Wisconsin, just take a look at the Wisconsin's legislature's partisan makeup.  I think you will find your answer there.

I was looking at a 1963 Official Guide the CNW and Milwaukee served Green Bay from Chicago even at that late date...

A lot of people don't realize that Green Bay is a really small city, just 105,000. That's less than half the size of Madison.

There was talk back in the 90s, I believe it was, of extending service up to Green Bay.

The ex-CNW route that would be a straight shot up the lakeshore has been severed. Not sure when that occurred so it would have to take a roundabout way through Fond Du Lac, Oshkosh, Appleton. All those cities combined do have a decent population but it would be the proverbial slow boat to China I believe.

That's true, but the Fox valley route is full of medium sized towns that would ensure a successfull rail passenger corridor!

Amtrak and wisdot just started thruway service to Milwaukee using Wisconsin coach lines connecting to the Hiawatha Service

is the Ex-Milwaukee Road route still intact for Chicago to Green Bay

Total subsidy per passenger-mile be would be very high.

Total subsidy per new passenger-mile (that is, trips not simply shifted from other modes) would be extremely high.

No. Green Bay to Hilbert Junction is missing at the north end, necessitating a detour via Menasha and Appleton. That routing would keep the Neenah-Menasha-Appleton-Kawukauna metroplex on the route, but bypass Fond du Lac and Oshkosh. It would also avoid the busy CN freight route over Byron Hill south of Fond du Lac.

You left out at what price would it sell out.

Attached either last or next to last train to Green Bay from Chicago but one with private car attached.(think last).
No longer a 400, (called streamliner) and was train through Applelton.

Milwaukee Road Line is severed but even before it was no where near standards for passenger operations.  CNW shore line is largely gone.

If service had continued after Amtrak it could still be viable as customer base, infrastructure would have been maintained.
Passenger service is like any business, once your customers have moved on it is not as easy to get back.
I-43 and 41 provide fast routes and they are not overcrowded except for certain weekend travel. There is a sizable population on the route north but of course the closer you get to Milwaukee the less benefit of the train?

At one time many of the Green Bay trains continued north but that business was largely gone even before Amtrak.
