Its been mentioned before that there is interest in rebuilding the line into Whitehorse from Carcross, is that still a possibility?

It looks like no, as they’re using the 645 power plant. I’m curious how they got around it, or if they’re considered rebuilds (using donated standard gauge cores and frames).

My understanding is that these are considered rebuilds.  However the White Pass doesn't necessarily have to do everything based on US law.   The White Pass & Yukon is the trade name used by three different railroads that all connect to each other, the Pacific and Arctic Railway and Navigation Company (in Alaska), the British Columbia Yukon Railway Company (in British Columbia) and the British Yukon Railway Company,  (in Yukon).

What happens, for example, if the new units are bought by the British Yukon Railway Company and delivered and accepted in Carcross, Yukon Territory? I'm not sure, but you can bet that they have attorneys who do know, so perhaps things such as this might be looked at differently when one steps on the other side of the imaginary line.

It is sitting out back of the shop.  These pictures were taken on the August 2nd.  I was told that the crews prefer the 73 over the 69.  The cab is tight on the 69, they can't see each other in the cab.  You can see why in the second picture.

The railroad operates for a short stretch in the USA, so I would think the locomotives need to be Tier 4. The WP&Y referred to them as new locomotives, but I think them being rebuilds is the answer (unless some special exemption comes into pay).
 

As a guide to what the locos will look like, NRE, its subcontractors, and licensees have built around 80+ GT26CU-3 lightweight clones in the last decade, using a fish-belly frame, the bulk (68) in South Africa, but also in Croatia and the USA.

The South African assembled units, are plated RRL, or NRE, or with a combined NRE/Grindrod plate. All used a cab forward configuration, CMT gauges, no standard.

The TZV Gredelj (Croatia) assembled units for Israel and for East African open access operator Calabash Fleet, have a convential cab, and carry NRE plates.

These are the Grindrod assembled 3' gauge unit for Colombia, I believe NRE plated, 7FDL-12 with a AR10 alternator, 764 traction mptors, 5650 bogies.

If you look at the total number of NRE export units over the last decade, it would appear that the bulk have been assenbled offshore.

For the White Pass units, I believe they will have a cab closer to the design of the Australian Qube logistics units as those have a cab that also meets US and Canadian crashworthiness sfandards. Here’s an example: https://www.flickr.com/photos/semmytrailer/7059486289

However, we don’t know if they’re cowl or hood units - White Pass has brutal winters and a coal unit may be better suited.

Last, it is a bummer that we won’t see 8-axle GE rebuilds in North America :)

Thanks everyone for the locomotive pictures. Very interesting. I did not know that the market for narrow gauge engines was so robust.

The Brits spread 42" gauge railways all over their former empire. Even non colonal countries like Japan adopted 42" gauge as their standard.

Where was the new loop track built?

Worldwide narrow gauge market is huge....

So are the cores for the WP&Y locos the unsold Qube 1109 and 1110 currently located at Mount Vernon?

These date back to 2013, so will be pre Tier 4
