Passenger Trains > NY Transit Museum charter SundayDate: 08/19/19 10:01 NY Transit Museum charter Sunday Author: chuchubob The New York Transit Museum, based in Brooklyn with a satteite branch in Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan, ran a charter Sunday using their three Brooklyn Union Gate Cars, which were built in 1903 and 1907. Four "Arnines", R-1 100 and 381, R-6, and R-9 1802, built from 1930 to 1940, were added because the Gate Cars are built of wood over a steel frame and present a possible fire hazard in the subway.
The charter boarded at the Essex Street JMZ station in Manhattan. 1. R-1 100 2. Gate Car 1404 3. reason for the name "gate Cars" Date: 08/19/19 10:05 Re: NY Transit Museum charter Sunday Author: chuchubob The 1903 Gate Car 1273, photographed above ground in Brooklyn. BRT was Brooklyn RapidTransit, which became BMT (Brooklyn Manhattan Transit) when the line was extended into Manhattan.

Become a NYTM member, are by reservation only, have various destinations. My trip was from Columbus Circle to the then-new Stillwell Avenue terminal in Coney Island over the Manhattan Bridge. Am amazed they are still running those open vestibule, elevated? cars, ran old elevated lines because their wooden construction made them lighter. www.mta.info/museum 718-664-3461 Enjoy! I never knew of any gate cars that actually survived....unless they were burried in Coney Island shops somewhere. By the time the Myrtle ave L was closed, the movement for saving NYCTA equipment was well under way, and iirc at least 6 Q cars were saved. Maybe more. Date: 08/20/19 14:33 Re: NY Transit Museum charter Sunday Author: joemvcnj I suppose they had to separate the BU cars from the Arnines at Metropolitan AVenue, and move each consist around to place the Arnines back in the lead to head back to Manhattan ?
There is Q car in the Transit Museum in its closed gate form in the 1939 Worlds Fair paint scheme. Photo taken last October |
