Amtrak launches 2-for-1 sale on sleeping car tickets for long-distance train travel

Ready for a long train ride on your next vacation? Buy a roomette or bedroom ticket on selected Amtrak trains, and a companion goes free. It’s cool savings for those who want to see America by riding the rails on long-distance routes.The 2-for-1 sale ends Oct. 14. Tickets purchased by that date are good for travel from Nov. 11 through April 8 (except for blackout dates).

What this REALLY is: When two persons travel in one sleeping car room, subject to the rules of the promotion and blackout dates, the second is not charged a rail fare.  The accommodations charge remains the same.

You've got that backwards:  the 2nd person in the room is charged for a coach seat (rail fare), but the accomodation charge (sleeping room fee) is covered by the 1st passenger.

A more accurate description is the companion's transportation charge is $0. "2-for-1," or "BOGO," can be construed as "half-price" by the undiscerning.

Confirmed by entering a sample booking at Amtrak.com. WAS-NOL on Nov. 12, the price for a roomette ($453) is the same, entering either 1 adult, or 2.

Yeah, it's like a 15-25% sale or whatever it works out to given the fare. I used it Whitefish-Chicago and it was a welcome discount to something that never was previously discounted. But it isn't a deep discount.
