Passenger Trains > DC: Metro offers to increase hours, and other goodies

The DC area transportation network offers a bundle of improvements for the bus and train riders in the District and its adjacent state partners in return for a dime increase in the fare.  Since this is the District and the suburbs, some infighting was inevitable.

Longer hours for train operations on the weekends. Flat fare option. Fewer station and line closings as more rebuilding has been achieved.  But there was concern about the "rampant fare evasion" and the District's failure to implement meaningful controls on it. In Maryland and Virginia, fare evasion is a crime. In DC, it's a throwaway ticket, often issued to a phony name.  The state members want the fare evasion charged against the District's share of the overall costs, which the District has no intent of paying.  The state members also see the later hours as a gift to District hospitality industry employees.

Getting rid of intermodal 2 fare zones, save a tiny discount, is a good thing.
