Amtrak rewards miles question
Author: czuleget

Planing a trip to Portland and back to Davis in early December. Anyone know if there are any restrictions at this time of the year?

Amtrak got rid of their rewards restrictions a few years ago. Now you can use your points any time, but instead of a fixed number of points per trip they have a cash value so you will use more points to travel at a busy time.

Do you still need to book three day in advance?

I just tried to access my rewards and found that they will be lost if you are inactive for 24 months.   Not good.

To overcome the cancellation of points, you have options

1. Buy a ticket and earn more
2. Buy points via the AGR site. Sometimes they run sales, but even buying the minimum amount will extend your points
3. Sign up for the survey club they push. Thw surveys are tedious, but you can earn points by completing them.

There is an annual fee. As long as the card is used, there is no cancellation of points.

There is a B of A card with no annual fee. As long as you are using the card, and subsequently earning points, there is no cancellation of points.

When they changed CC vendors I stopped getting points and I may have lost 84K in points.  I have an email into Amtrak we will see.

If you had the Chase Card and have not earned any additional points in two years, you have lost the point balance.  Bank of America has two Amtrak MasterCards. One is Platinum Card with no fee but only earns 2 pts per $ of Amtrak purchases. The other is the World Mastercard with $79 fee and earns 3 pts per Amtrak $ spent. Both have introductory bonus points offers.

Buy a cheap ticket with points--then cancel. Sure it will "burn" a few points for the cancellation fee, but it re-sets the clock for another 24 months.
