Farewell Sierra Hotel
Author: mdolot1

Well, maybe not farewell, but farewell under the current ownership. After 27 years it's time. Wish it could go on forever, but we're all 27 years older and one partner has passed and Amtrak has become difficult to say the least.  So we leave Chicago tomorrow on the California Zephyr for a final round trip to Emeryville. Any pictures along the way would be greatly appreciated. It's been a great ride!

This was always one of my favorite cars and I photographed it every time it came to New Mexico.  I hope you found a good owner for it.

And what a shame that we had to be behind the engine

My first encounter with Sierra Hotel was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 11/17/00.  It appeared that WC had picked it up from CP.  Gerry

Thanks to Amtrak for starting a wave of PV sell offs. Of the many PV's I've had the pleasure of touring through or riding, Sierra Hotel is among the finest.  A classic Budd short dome. Bedrooms. And oh yes, an open platform that can no longer be used. No wonder the owner is selling.

Well he did mention that one partner has passed and that he isn't getting any younger either.

Yes, but another party has purchased the car.  So yes, PV's are being put up for sale.  But a lot of cars are finding buyers.  So all is not lost.  And things with Amtrak could change in the future.

I remember seeing it a few times behind no. 3 here in Flagstaff, I hope there is a good owner for one of the most beautiful passenger cars I've ever seen!
