SPV-2000's in the Chicago coach yard
Author: inCHI

To follow up on the thread about them traveling to Chicago on 29 two days ago, today I saw the 6 SPV-2000's sitting in the Chicago coach yard. Wonder where they are headed to?

Maybe since they are a little heavier they will be used on the Amtrak consist’s on CN and UP for track circuit shunting.

I may be mistaken but I believe there were some SPVs in the autumn colors express consist that ran in October. That consist originated in Chicago so perhaps these cars were on the train.

I read that they are to be used on the Chicago Polar Express train rides.

CUS's The Polar Express Train Ride starts this Saturday, 11/23/2019.  I think the SPVs will be used on these trips.  Website:

Let's hope they've had time to give these former SPVs (they were turned into Constitution Liners by CDOT - loco hauled only) a scrubbing. They sat in New Haven for some time after being sidelined and the interiors were covered in a nice thick layer of dust.

I find it quite odd that Amtrak would lease cars from an outside entity as if they don't have 6 extra Amfleet or Horizon coaches sitting around that could be used for Polar Express.

Though Amtrak is the train operator, this is a private undertaking and the organizers have found outside-Amtrak equipment.
Maybe Anderson was gouging them for the use of Amtrak cars?

Did CDOT actually remove/disable the propulsion equipment from these cars or simply not use it?

These cars were to be used as the standard coaches in the Autumn Colors Express (New River train) but were not.  There was a report they were not yet mechanically Amtrak certified at that time.  Obviously they are now, having come by Amtrak from Savannah, Georgia.

It was all removed. They're basically bare-bones Amfleet cars (33" wheels, 3-2 seating, no carpet anywhere). One some of the cars, the drive shaft was removed long before they were pulled from service the first time. The power plant was only retained for HEP, so the cars could be pulled by anything that was available (RS-3, GP-7, CF-7).

Foxville & Northern Railway owns them. From whatI have gathered, Amtrak is not allowing the use of their amfleets/horizons for Polar Express CUS this year.

Nice they have cab cars, but I have my doubts they will be PTC-equipped.

I thought that they were all built with cabs?

They were all built with cabs, but only four of the originsl order of 13 were rebuilt as cab cars.  They may be equipped with an early ACSES, as they were being tested a while  back.

FWIW, the string of SPV’s was moving north through Chicago Union Station this afternoon at 1pm. I assume they were enroute to Track 1 which is being decorated for the holidays.
