Passenger Trains > Jim Thorpe Starting to Fold on the Tax Issue?

Trains Magazine Newswire is reporting that Jim Thorpe has dropped its lawsuit against Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railroad and is sitting down with representatives to try to work out a deal on the tax issue.

If they have been doing any Xmas season operations, it doesn't read like it will happen this year regardless. Some economic damage will have been done. With Thanksgiving late this year, it will be a short Xmas season anyway, which is not beneficial to retailers. 

To me there is nothing to work out regarding amusement taxes to the town of Jim Thorpe.  This railroad already pays taxes as a business to the State of Pennsylvania and by being a common carrier railroad, they have the right to operate both freight and passenger trains over their railroad.  The local officials of Jim Thorpe should be thrilled that these tourist passenger trains bring in people to the area who in turn spend money with the local restaurants and other establishments which generates jobs and taxes.  End of story.

Drop the lawsuit and demands for money owed and start collecting the fee.   Folks get a nice train ride, the town gets a much needed taste,life is good.  

Unless you’re a cheap stalwart, you more than likely wouldn’t notice.

I hope Andy Muller flatly refuse even the idea of an amusement tax on any train ride. If he agrees to pay anything, would that not put every tourist railroad in the target zone for new taxes?  Some could not ever survive such an idea.
