With all of the rain they've had the past few days it's not exactly surprising that the bluffs are on the move, again...

Wow.  Looking at the video, that's very close to the tracks themselves.  I wonder how they are going to stabilize it....

No place to add the 2nd track either? Guess there going to piss off a bunch of homeowners sooner or later.

Haha, good one. And so true.

There was an in-depth SDUT article some months ago about the plan for a billion-dollar-plus bypass tunnel to avoid the bluffs.

I think it was discussed here on TO, in case anyone wants to search for the discussion.

Any civil engineer who thinks the soil around there is stable enough for a tunnel is insane.
Everything is sliding towards the ocean and has been for centuries.

The story I was thinking of was published back in February. It reports on 5 potential routes, four of which involve a tunnel up to 270-feet deep, and as much as a mile inland.

Here’s the link:

The homeowners will proclaim victory when the railroad is gone.  Perhaps a short-lived victory, however, as they watch their homes slide onto the beach below because the railroad will no longer be shoring up the bluffs.
