Amtrak service to Tampa
Author: P

I guess I haven't paid attention, but since I was looking at  a possible trip to Tampa, it appears that Amtrak trains do not go to Tampa.  A bus connection appears to be available, but no train.  When was the last time Tampa was served directly with a train?

At about 5:30 this evening when train 92 left for New York.

You want the Silver Star.  It serves Tampa directly.

Does the train split in Orlando or Kissimme where one section goes to Tampa and the other section goes to Miami?

No. There hasn't been a split for the Silvers since the mid 90's.

Since the Palmetto was truncated from Miami to Savannah in 2004, the Silver Star has served Tampa. The train double backs on itself between Tampa and Auburndale (just north of the Winter Haven station). There is a large turnover of passengers at Tampa, so 1 train basically functions as 2 different routes in Florida without the need for a layover facility.

So it heads west to Tampa, reverses course back east, but heads south to Miami?    I presume it would do the reverse route on the way north?

Yes. It stops in Lakeland in both directions.

The Lakeland station code to/from points north is LAK. The code to/from points south is LKL.

Amtrak has that station pair blocked in their system. So you can't travel from LAK to LKL.  (Get on in Lakeland, take the train to Tampa, and ride back to Lakeland.)

Lakeland is a discharge only stop for trains to Tampa and receive only stop for trains from Tampa. Theoretically, the Star could leave the first Lakeland stop early. Of course, often times the train is running late, but on the rare occasion where everything goes right I have seen this occur.

I rode Winter Park-Tampa and return about 5 years ago.  Just outside of Tampa, the train turns on a wye and then backs s-l-o-w-l-y into the station, which is a stub end terminal.
