From the article:

" And European rail operators that bet on sleeper trains a few years back are making a profit."

Hmmm, how can that be????

Makes a good case for a BOS-WAS sleeper.

Your train - 66 - and running mate 67 currently run overnight on the NEC.  Adding a sleeper wouldn’t change things.

copy that.  adding a sleeper to a current train sounds like an idea that is worth a try.........

The return of the Night Owl! I travelled overnight WAS-BOS in a 10-6 sleeper back in the 80s.

There was a sleeper on the NEC till around 2003. One Viewliner sleeper on train 66 and 67 each. Last ran as the Federal, Washington DC to Boston. You got as much as the business class passenger, plus a snack when boarding, and cold breakfast in the morning, delivered by the attendant who also oversaw the car and put beds up and down. Sound familiar? This ordeal was very basic and very dumbed down by its end. Could be easily reinstated..... Yes, Amtrak even has enough sleepers presently to re-instate service, and Amtrak has said it would restore sleeper service on the NEC with the Viewliner II order. We'll see.

The Executive Sleeper was great. Watch the then great Wings beat up on the Rangers at MSG. Down the excelator to a waiting cozy bedroom. Wake up in DC the next morning for the trip home on the Cap. What's not to like.

In NYP, more like 7am at the latest. Rush hour you know. There is no wiggle room for spare tracks after that.

Me to !!!
I did what was called "The Excutive Sleeper" that was picked up going southbound and dropped off going north #66 & #67
This was awesome as you got sleep in sleeping car in the bowels of Penn stationfor about 5 or 6 hours before you were picked up!!! :):):)

Back in the mid-80s I was on an early northbound Metroliner from DC to NY.  As we pulled into Baltimore, the platform was packed with people waiting for our train.  At the same time, on the opposite side of the platform, one of the sleeper-equiped overnight NYC-DC trains pulled to a stop.  One of the window shades went up, revealing a guy standing there in his jockey shorts, scratching his "parts" and the crowd turned around to take a look.  He finally noticed and quickly pulled down the shade.  One of the funniest things I've ever seen on a train.

I always thought the overnight sleeper service was a good idea between NY and DC, but never had the chance to take it myself.  Got you there early with no need for a hotel.

Yes, but now you take a 6 am Acela Express and get to NYC/WAS by 9 am and all's well. Washington to Boston or vice versa, that's the sleeper territory to capture now.

Try getting to NYPS or WAS before 6am - not easy via NY subway, WMATA, and impossible from some commuter lines.

Not impossible..... come on now.... I am up at 5 am every day, and by 5:30 am I was out of my NYC apartment heading to NYP to catch the 6 am Acela. Sometimes it was the Regional following, or 7 am Acela.... did this for nearly a year on Wednesdays. If I wanted to go down the night before to WAS and hotel it - that was on my dime! I don't see the "Executive Sleeper setout" being popular with the current frequencies and trip time from NYP to WAS, let alone stashing it down in NYP awaiting pickup or drop off.

And if you are coming from outside the 4 boros via LIRR or MN, then what ?

I think a thru-sleeper would make more sense, and I don't think Amtrak wants to be switching cars in New York Penn Staion especially at the start of rush hour.

NYC - and boros etc. - are not the sleeper market for an overnight sleeper train travelling to/from DC and Boston. And it has to be a thru sleeper.

I took the sleeper on #67 in 2004. I also remember the Bos-Nyp sleeper. You could stay on til 8am in NYP and board at 10pm car was dropped and added to the overnight train.

All is NOT well, having to get up at 4:00 AM.   At least for me it's not.
