Oops! Big rig gets stuck on Fresno railroad crossing

Tuesday, January 21st 2020

FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A big rig hauling cars through Fresno got stuck while crossing over railroad tracks.

The trailer got high centered Tuesday afternoon on the double tracks crossing Hammond Ave. between Clark St. and Effie St. in the Blackstone and Olive area.

Amtrak trains had to be stopped in both directions for over an hour while crews worked to free the big rig.

A large tow truck lifted the back of the trailer allowing the big rig to pull forward and clear the tracks.

The road is back open and trains are running again.

Must be near where the old Fresno Interurban branch to Clovis splits off, which is also called Hammond...

That's exactly where it is. The branch is served by the SJVR now. It's also right at the beginning (or end if going east) of "Hammond Curve" which is a 35 for passenger trains, and 30 for freight. Going west out of Fresno it's 40/35 until the curve and it's a long straight approaching Hammond. A westbound would have chance to see a high-centered truck and stop. But eastbound you are going through a blind curve. No way anything cound stop in time if it suddenly encountered a vehicle stalled on Hammond Ave.

And at just about every country grade crossing on the BNSF in the Valley there's a sign warning of high centering.
They've had enough of them out there.
