Open the door, take a few shots, then close the door and leave the vestibule.  What's happened with me is the engineer spots me in the rear view mirror and radios the conductor.  By the time the conductor gets to the vestibule I'm back in my roomette.

A good idea is to change clothes after getting your shots, as the engineer usually describes the clothing worn by the perp in the vestibule.  You can hear the conversations with your scanner.

and hair dye- hair dye is a must.

My approach is a bit more involved and requires serious preplanning. You really have to be “all in”:
I hired out with Amtrak and worked with said conductor for about 25yrs or so...
it’s not a plan I recommend.
