The hits keep coming for Amtrak #58(26)

Amtrak 58 this morning experienced mechanical problems with its P42 somewhere between Memphis and Dyersburg. A freight engine had to be brought down from Fulton (!) to rescue it. It finally pulled into Carbondale, IL at 0912, and finally departed at 0959. Imagine my surprise when the freight unit was a GTW GP38-2, running long hood forward...

I notice the #6228 was originally the DT&I's Bicentennial unit, #1776. Later re# back to #228.

To me, this shows the cost-cutting stupidity of assigning only one loco to a train of this size.

Of course, one loco can "pull it" - but the desirable redundancy of a second engine,  prevents terrible passenger ordeals like this.

I think Amtrak also must send the engine back to around where they got with just as much fuel as they took it with.

Speculation says the #23 was rendered disabled due to a malfunctioning radiator fan.
