Amtrak 2010 Cross County Train Trip: Part 1: NYC-Los Angeles, CA
Author: Passfanatic

Starting in August of 2010, I embarked on a long cross country train trip to the West Coact from the East Coast. I rode the Cardinal from NWK to Chicago, the Texas Eagle from Chicago to San Antonio, the Sunset Limited from San Antonio to Los Angeles, the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Portland Oregon, the Empire Builder Portland Section from Portland to Spokane, the Main Section from Spokane to Seattle, the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Portland, and then the Empire Builder Portland Section(again) from Portland to Spokane and then traveled the rest of the way to Chicago. Part 1 in this thread will show the Cardinal and the Texas Eagle.
1. Washington DC Union Station platforms-I think this train is the Northbound Crescent.
2. Amtrak Cardinal Train # 51 at WAS. P42 # 133 will take us the rest of the way to CHI. We had an AEM7 from NYP-WAS.
3. Amtrak Train # 51 at Charlottesville-view is looking east.

1. Sunset Station in San Antonio.

2. The nicely restored San Antonio Station.

3. Some old steam engine on display.

The trip on the Texas Eagle from Chicago to San Antonio was awesome, despite some tardiness. Thanks to excessive padding, the train made up a lot of time into San Antonio. At San Antonio, any through cars coming from the Texas Eagle and heading to Los Angeles would be waiting for the Sunset Limited to arrive and would be attached to the Sunset Limited for the rest of the trip westward across the deserts of Western Texas, Arizona, and California.
