Late running # 51 Cardinal
Author: tmaher

Just curious, any idea as to what happened to westbound Cardinal train # 51?
Arrived Southshore, KY 26 minutes down but was 4hrs 37 minutes down at the
next stop at Maysville, KY! Estimating a 1:29 PM CT arrival at Chicago.

Amtrak Twitter said "hit debris", but that does that mean?  Trees?  Mudslide?  Objects placed on tracks by vandals?

Maybe from thunderstorms.  According to the Amtrak Alerts via Twitter:

Heavy thunderstorms and reports of isolated tornados on Cardinals path between Indianapolis and Ashland KY overnight.   Lots of trees/wires down all over.  Real good chance that is the culprit.

I lost power for 36 hours across the Ohio River in Ohio.  A good storm line moved through about 3 a.m. yesterday.

I finally had a few minutes to listen to the Scioto scanner feed and got some information.  The CSX LF train dispatcher talked to PO51 as he was approaching South Shore, KY, giving him tornado and high wind warnings from MP CA 579 thru CA 611.  LF said that after being held about 1/2 hr for the tornado, rules provided passenger train speed to not exceed 20 MPH through the high wind limits.  She also mentioned trees on the track at CA 600.8, which I believe is just east of the station (?shelter) at Maysville, KY.
