Passenger Trains > BART Silicon Valley Extension to Open June 13

The Bay Area Rapid Transit District's much delayed extension from Warm Springs to Milpitas and
Berryessa/N. San Jose will now open on June 13.  Project cost for the new 10 mile line came in
at $2.3 billion.  With the on going health emergency initial service frequency will be a train every
30 minutes eventually becoming a 15 minute interval.

The line follows the old Western Pacific San Jose branch for its entire length and parallels the UP
Warm Springs Sub for the first few miles out of Warm Springs.

The final phase to downtown San Jose and (possibly) Santa Clara is still many years off and will be

It’s about time! Well that’s probably what most are saying. That little extension sure had plenty of delays. I rode as far as the Warm Springs stop a few years ago, don’t know when I’ll be back in the Bay Area to check out these new stops. Hope it gets plenty of use.

Very cool! This took quite some time. I never believed that I would be walking distance (2 miles) to a BART station! I am excited to see how they integrate bart at the Santa Clara station along the Nehall "yard" and Avaya Stadium location. 

If they have some sort of shuttle between Santa Clara Station and the Airport they may have a winner.
That would make all three Bay Area airports accessable via BART.

Will there be single train service all the way between San Francisco  and  San Jose?

Let's remember it will be many years, if ever, before BART reaches Santa Clara.  VTA route 60 presently
connects Santa Clara Caltrain with San Jose Airport running every 20 minutes and needing just 10 minutes
to reach Terminal A.  The ride is free if you board at the airport with regular fares to ride inbound to SJC.

Critics of the extension beyond Diridon feel it should go direct to the airport rather than simply duplicating
Caltrain to Santa Clara.  The airport option is, of course, considerably more expensive.  The construction
of a BART maintenance facility at the old SP Newhall Yard site further complicates things.

Yes.  It's called "Caltrain".  It's fast and frequent and a lot cheaper per mile to build than BART.

It appears there will be single train BART service to SF.  The new system map shows both green and orange line trains going to the new stations, and the green line goes directly to Daly City through San Francisco.  Orange line trains go to Richmond.

$230 million/mile!  Was that due to the type of construction for BART, right-of-way acquisition, cost overruns, or what?

once caltrain is ALL electrified, will the operating/maintenance costs be less than when it was all diesels?

I seen VTA PowerPoint presentations showing an underground shuttle going from Santa Clara/Caltrain/BART underneath the runways to Terminal A and continuing to First Street for a connection with Light Rail.    Perhaps someday....

I thought it was because San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties were not members of BART when BART was originally built.

They weren't because they already had Cal Train

Hey,  Im talking about BART and Amtk Calif in the east bay.  Yeash!  Yes, I know that bart goes to SF and AmCal goes east, but from OAK to Niles area they are basically parallel.   You could have extended AmCal down the old WP just as easily, for a lot less money

Why would u need service SJC to SFO via east bay and via the peninsula anyway?    Im guessing its just politics as usual.
