Hate to tell you, that is NOT Grand Mesa.  It's part of the Book Cliffs that are on both sides of the Colorado River east of Grand Junction.  If someone told you that was Grand Mesa, they were full of it.  The floor of the Colorado River (Grand) Valley is around 5,000 feet elevation there--the Book Cliffs are around 6,000-6,500 ft.  Grand Mesa would be out of sight from that vantage point--the Book Cliffs blocking the view.  I lived in that area for some time--I know every square inch of it.  As an aside, the Colorado River was originally named the Grand River in Colorado and Utah, not becoming the Colorado River until it reached Arizona.  That's why, along its course, you have Grand County, Grand Valley (Parachute), Grand Junction, and--presumably--Grand Mesa in Colorado; and Grand County in Utah.  Thus, in its earlier years, Colorado had two "Grand" Rivers--what is now the Colorado River on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide, and the Rio Grande River (Spanish for Grand River)  on the Eastern Slope of the Continental Divide.  Just to make things more confusing, the Eastern Slope Rio Grande River headwaters (a few miles east of Silverton, Colorado, but the other side of the Continental Divide from it) is actually west in longitude many miles (roughly 2 degrees longitude)  from the Western Slope Colorado River headwaters in the western portion of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Not confusing when you understand why they are named as such...checkerboard pattern based on how many miles from the Utah border.  BSB
