AMTK 11 with a P32 Leading
Author: jimB

Thanks to a heads up from jmf1910, I caught #11 (Coast Starlight) at Coyote (South of San Jose) with P32 510 leading, right on time, with the baggage car at the rear. I didn't realize any P32s were still in service. This is shot from the grade crossing just North of downtown Coyote with the Metcalf power plan in the background. For nostalgia, the third shot is the revenue debut of the P32s, 501 in the Pepsi Can scheme on the inaugural run of Capitol Corridor service in Dec 1991, on the Guadalupe River bridge in Alviso (San Jose). The boats have been removed. The ducks have not. Jim B

Where did you get the idea the P32's weren't in service anymore??? They're used every day!

Maybe just the CA owned ones up here or gone. I haven't seen any running in NorCal, but and thought was true elsewhere.

Nice catch at Coyote, and thanks for the look back to 1991.

The P32s in our territory, CDTX 2051 and 2052 haven't been seen in a while. When I took a joyride on the Capitol Corridor before the pandemic lockdown, I saw them in Oakland in the Amtrak yard there. It's been a while since I've taken a peak at their Los Angeles yard, but there's usually a P32 or two parked there, and AMTK 510 must have done a jailbreak. :-)

I intercepted the P32 along the beaten path, at Alviso and San Carlos St. overpass in San Jose.

The P32 in LA is the easiest to get locomotive when the Coast Starlight needs a locomotive when one of the assigned P42's goes down.
The fact that they can make HEP and aren't restricted to 70 MPH are plusses too.

Nice video, Charles. I was thinking about those spots but Coyote gave me some extra time since I didn't get going quickly. I like that Alviso spot in the morning.

I that jmf1910 below you at San Carlos? Vagrants don't usually carry cameras, except for the Santa Clara vagrant group.

He had a similar hair style, but I wasn't sure if that was him.

Thanks for sharing the '91 photo!  Such a nice look back, and a graphic reminder of what we've lost.

Nope, I was home working away! I have a lot more muscle on my bones than that kid, and I also would not trespass along busy, urban tracks. Glad you both were able to get some nice photos and video of this old workhorse!

I looked like that kid 35 years ago and got many of my best photos doing what he did and have no regrets about doing so.  The danger today compared to then is the heavier hand of the law and the unpredictability of vagrants.
