Passenger Trains > Bad day in Florida

As the attached screen shot shows, 98, 52, and 92 are all stopped short of the Buffalo Bluff bridge over the St. Johns River south of Palatka  Florida.  The  Bascule lift bridge is experiencing problems connected to a power outage in the area.  

(Amtrak is reporting it as "Buffalo Creek Drawbridge"  which is in Buffalo NY -- this is known as the Buffalo Bluff darwbridge)

The bridge doesn't have a back up generator?

Time to find the hand crank.

This is the bridge and track CSX wants to hand over to Amtrak

This bridge has had the same problems since the 1970’s as I had first hand experience sitting on a train going to Miami waiting 4 hours for power to be restored

Poor 98 lost 8 hours due to this, 92 was far enough back to have only lost just over 3.

Power outage followed by a power surge which damaged some electrical equipment. They had to hand crank the bridge down!

That must have taken some time and muscle power to crank down that bridge.

And after all these years they could never find a way to eleminate the problem? Sad!

And the good news is: after July 6 Amtrak will only have two trains to worry about getting beyond the bridge.
