Passenger Trains > Amtrak train to Roanoke, VA. question

What is the name of the  interlocking where it gets off the ex Southern line in Lynchburg to head west to Roanoke?
Any photos of interlocking available to post here?  Thanks for your help.

On the Southern Railway, Lynchburg was MP172.5, Kemper St. Station.
According to Employee TT issues from the early 1970's, SOU/N&W had an Interlocked Junction in Lynchburg.
Evidently this junction was too close to MP172.5 to be given a station identity of its own based on standards of the time.
The junctioin is actually a little south of Kemper St, Station as this was the only station joint trains called on in Lynchburg.
Was through there on the Piedmont any number of times 1972 - 1976 but that was a long time ago,
Unfortunately, I can no longer pictue the junction in my mind.
You might try Bing or Google so you can see the junction but thatb won't provide a station name if it has been assigned one.

The interlockings on the connection are "Montview" on the Southern side and "Kinney" on the N&W.

Could be the present interchange for the Amtrak train to Roanoke is at Montview MP174.6 that is 2.1 Mi, south of Lynchburg MP172.5.

Back when SOU and N&W were running joint trains, the interchange was at Lynchburg.

The N&W had a line through Lynchburg where they and the Southern had an interlocked interchange. The N&W also had a bypass line to the south that went through Montview on the Southern where the two roads had another interlocked interchange for freight.

Later on Sunday, will post a map showing N&W lines in the Lynchburg area.

If the N&W line through Lynchburg has been abandoned, then Amtrak would have to use the interchange at Montview. This is why I suggested looking at satellite views on Bing or Google.

N&W original main line through Lynchburg Union Station was progressively abandoned after N&W built its Woodall Road station on the freight belt in the mid-1960s. Nothing left. Prior to construction of Kemper Street station in the 1910s, Southern's main line passed through LUS. Southern removed the river bridge and abandoned the tracks of the old main line on the north bank of the river. South of the river the "old main line" is still in place.

The N&W bypass route, now the former N&W main, does not pass through Montview but crosses over the former Southern north of Montview between Montview and the Lynchburg Kemper Street station.  The connector between Kinney and Montview used by passenger trains, now and for many years, is perhaps a mile long.  While in the past the speed through this connection for passenger trains was 25 MPH, it is now 10 MPH.  The connection is also used for freight interchange between the two railroads/yards.

The original N&W route through Lynchburg Union Station on the James River from the 1850s has been abandoned over the years, but at least some trackage from the west end at Forest to the east remains today.  Don't know how much it is used.  Part of the right-of-way in downtown Lynchburg is a very interesting walking trail.
