Flynn to give interview tomorrow morning
Author: ronald321

Just saw that  Amtrak CEO Flynn will give a live stream interview tomorrow to:

The Washington Post
June 29
10:00 AM (EDT)

I can't find anything about this on the Washington Post website.

Can anyone help with what we have to do to watch this?

I followed the link and read some headlines from the front page... That paper is radical! And even racist. Link closed.

Thanks, but this link is just the Washington Post website -- nothing about the interview tomorrow.

Oh, well.  probably just as well.  These interviews are usually not very specific.  Just "boiler plate" kind of stuff.

Nevertheless, I wanted to hear how someone who has no passenger railroad experience, tell us how he intends to run one.

So, if anyone catches it, please give us a report here.

Wow it's amazing that such a radical racist newpaper has managed to win 69 Pulitzer Prizes.

"William J. Flynn is the new president and CEO of Amtrak, taking over the country’s passenger railroad service in the middle of a pandemic. Amtrak had its best year ever in 2019 only to experience a 95 percent drop in ridership these past few months. Despite reducing service and taking substantial steps to shrink operating costs, Amtrak is seeking supplemental funding from Congress in order to be viable next year and beyond. Will new safety measures and a fleet of high-speed trains lure riders back when the country reopens? Join Washington Post Live on Monday, June 29 at 10:00 a.m. ET."

The same way Hitler won Man of the Year for Times Magazine in 1938. Just because the media praises someone or something, or is praised itself, doesn't make it true.

Um, no. Absolutely false equivalency and a misleading as well as unconvincing argument.

The Pulitzer Prize is an award for excellence in journalism, literature, and musical composition.

The Time Man of the Year is not an award but rather a distinction applied to the most influential newsmaker of the year. To quote Time itself on the matter:

'Hitler appeared on the cover of TIME on multiple occasions — most famously perhaps on Jan. 2, 1939, when he was named Man of the Year. That choice abided by the dictum of TIME founder Henry Luce, who decreed that the Man of the Year — now Person of the Year — was not an honor but instead should be a distinction applied to the newsmaker who most influenced world events for better or worse. In case that second criterion was lost on readers, the issue that named Hitler dispensed with the portrait treatment that cover subjects typically got. Instead he was depicted as a tiny figure with his back to the viewer, playing a massive organ with his murdered victims spinning on a St. Catherine’s wheel. Underneath the stark, black-and-white illustration was the caption, “From the unholy organist, a hymn of hate.”'

Amtrak will pay for Covid tests.
Expects to have new Acela in service by end of 2021.
Bright future with HR2

23 minute interview is divided into segments

What was the gist of it concerning the network trains? Will listen tonight but curious.

I took a few notes in real time. By no means comprehensive:

Gives kudos to front line staff who can't work from home.

Flynn says Amtrak could "double" traffic in 20 years. Cites "opportunities" for growth in the LD network.

Acela 21 "on schedule." 8 trainsets in service by the end of 2021.

Pitched the additional $1.5 billion appropriation for FY21-- claims there will be "cost reductions" of $500 million.

Touts a list of "investments" requiring government funds--including "investments" on the private railroads to promote timekeeping.

Gateway -- touts approvals of Portal Bridge. "First step." Interesting what he didn't say--no fretting about tunnel failures.

Host says lots of listener questions about the LDs.

LDs are "essential." Amtrak "fully committed to" LDs. "There's bipartisan support -- we recognize that."

"10 out 15 trains" to tri-weekly. Flynn describes the LD service reductions to tri-weekly as "for the winter." Claims it's ridership-driven and seasonal.

Restorations on a case-by-case basis in the Spring / Summer. Says multiple times the reductions are seasonal.

Host says lots of questions about food service. Flynn: "food service a part of the experience."

Touts the Democrat-backed HR2.

10 out of 15 trains to go 3x weekly? Sounds very similar to Anderson's 5-6 LD trains are all Amtrak wants to operate. That statement alone leads me to believe nothing has changed. Just trying a different tactic and more lip service with non answers and ambiguity.

"10 out of 15." I guess this is how you get there: two (Sunset, Cardinal) are already tri-weekly. Then you count the Auto Train as daily, Palmetto as daily, and Silver Meteor as quad-weekly. Technically that gives five out of fifteen not being "cut" to tri-weekly. "10 out of 15" seems like a gimmicky way to downplay the cuts.

No more so than the reactionary WSJ.

Doubling traffic should be a five year goal.

Projected results a generation from now are pretty much meaningless.
