Passenger Trains > C&NW #402 leads an Amtrak inspection train- Nelson, IL- 1988

Photos of an Amtrak inspection train taken directly across the field from our country home in the 1980's.
The EB is led by one of the C&NW "Presidential" F's an F40, and 4 cars.
In addition to occasional CZ reroutes, there were these "test" runs of a proposed separate section between Chicago and Omaha.

How I happened to be up near the NQ plant (MP 103 on the Geneva Sub) to catch this train is lost to memory.
It could've been a heads-up from mentor railfans in Dixon, or from scanner traffic.

The going away shot is a bit lacking; perhaps I was looking to see who was in the coaches.

Lastly, a shot directly north to our home on the Pitcher Farm, where we spent a great 10 years and countless feet of video tape and rolls of film.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. Didn't know a separate Chicago-Omaha section was looked at. The Amtrak City of Everywhere did get quite lengthy in the 80s and early 90s.

I like the farm shot!  I spent many a day along the C&NW tracks East of there in Ogle County!

I wonder how many times the Amtrak 10-6 sleeper behind the F40PH, ex Union Pacific 10-6 (Budd 1950), made the trip across the C&NW Chicago and Omaha, behind C&NW power between 1950 and October 1955?
