Passenger Trains > La Junta/Denver trains

Can somebody tell me how they truned the La Junta to Denver trains at La Junta and Denver?

At La Junta, I assume that they used the wye at the west end of the yard where the lines to Denver and Raton diverge.

If anyone knows otherwise, I would like to hear.

In Denver the Santa FE trains went to todays BNSF denver Diesel shops, used the same wye as today's CZ   SF had not run passenger trains into Denver since the Centennial State quit running,  till the C&S running varnish  stopped in  1967

Thanks for supplying the Denver info and the nice picture.

Unless things have recently changed dramatically at Denver, CZ does not wye (It may have many years ago, before Amrak).  #5 comes off of BNSF, turns northward onto the UP at Fox Junction, and backs into the station, leaving once again on UP; I've watched it many times.  #6 does the reverse, heads east on BNSF, then backs into the station. At one time the trains could have wyed at Pullman Junction, but I think that possibility has long been gone.

Dan, Santa Fe ran a connecting train La Junta - Denver until Amtrak took over.
I rode the train April 21 1971, connecting from the Super Chief, riding from Los Angeles.

Sorry, I got # 6 wrong, obviously.  It heads into the station off the UP, backs out to Fax Junction, then crosses over to BNSF and heads est.

Nope.  You were right the first time.  No. 5 and No. 6 both back into DUS on arrival so that the power is on the north end where the fuel pads are located.

texchief1 - The very first time I rode the route which was back in June 1970 (ATSF's Super Chief at the time), if my brain cells recall correctly, I remember seeing an RDC protecting that service at LaJunta - in which case turning was not an issue at all! 

you must be thinking of a Rock island  run years previous

The Santa Fe RDC's were out of service in 1970 and were in the process of being sold.

The AT&SF connection headed in at La Junta.  After 18 went through, a yard engine, usually a GP-7, coupled on and hauled the train west on the Trinidad line.  At the wye, they uncoupled, the passenger train rounded the wye, through a spring switch, and took off for Pueblo.  Sharp and efficient.

At the end, power was usually an F-7A, SG car, baggage, and normally one coach.  Extra coaches when needed.  Last run saw two coaches and the Intermountain NRHS car 96.
