Left Albany OT at 3:05 pm and arrived Boston 8:54  pm. It took 3 hrs., 17 mins. to cover the 102 miles from Albany-Springfield. Arrived Boston 54 minutes late.
I noticed a fair amount of freight traffic in the Chester area  today which may have accounted for some of the delays.  A passenger boarding in Chicago last night almost had a 24 hr trip to Boston. Somewhat sad but it appears not much can be done to speed things up. Too bad something equal to the  old NY Central fast train called the New England States is not running. I remember seeing it depart form the Framingham and Worcester stations in the 1950's and it had at least four sleeping cars.

Here you go, a film from1965ish, of #28, The New England States, making its way between Framingham and Riverside (plus a shot of #405 leaving Worcester in the same era)

Thanks for providing the film of the New England State. Nice to see a reasonably long train making the run.

New York Central in the Fall of 1939 advertised the New England States as "The Premier Train" between Boston and Chicago. It departed Boston(South Station) at 3:00 pm and arrived Chicago(LaSalle St) at 9:30 am. Today's Lake Shore Ltd. departs Boston 12:50 pm and arrives  Union Station at 9:50 am. Eastbound the New England States departed La Salle St. station at 3:00 pm and arrived Boston(South Station) 10:58 am. Today's Lake Shore departs Chicago(Union Station)9:30 pm and arrives Boston at 8:00 pm.

A "reclining seat deluxe coach" was provided on the 1939 N.E. States but the first class cars dominated. Sleeping cars featured Drawing Rooms, Compartments, Bedroom and Section Sleeping Cars. Pillows for coach passenger could be available for rent at 25 cents. Dining car and Lounge car service also available. In those days thre was a more positive attitude about premier trains in comparison to today's travel climate.
