Labor Day Weekend 1964
Author: CBQ4002

The Illini RR club ran an excursion over Labor Day Weekend, leaving Chicago on Friday Sept 4 behind the Copper Country Limited enroute to Marquette, MI for a day on the Marquette & Huron Mountain on Sept 5.  That night the group was moved from Marquette to Duluth via the DSS&A.  On Sept 6 the excurson traveled from Duluth to Virginia, MN & return.  That night the entourage was moved to St. Paul, MN for a return to Chicago which went via the Milwaukee Road.
What I am looking for is any info that might be available from the origional Illini RR Club flyer, if someone has a copy in their archives.   Also looking for anyone that was on the trip and might have any insights about the trip, and return to Chicago via the Milwaukee Road.
Thanks
Ron Burkhard

Wait. The CC Limited didn't serve Marquette. It came close, but veered left, west, on the DSS&A/Soo on its way to Houghton and Calumet. Houghton and Calumet are on the Keweenaw Peninsula, known as the Copper Country dues to copper mines in the area.

Either they went from Chicago to Negaunee on the Peninsula 400, or took the Copper Country LImited to Champion, then charter bus to Marquette, The trip to Duluth must also have been on a charter train, as I don't think the DSS&A still had regular passenger service between Marquette and Duluth in 1964.

Correct.  The DSS&A ceased to exist after 1960 with its merger into the Soo Line on January 1, 1961.  Aside from the Copper Country Limited, the DSS&A's last passenger service was a St. Ignace, MI - Marquett, MI round trip operated with an RDC which was discontinued in 1958.

Wasn't there a mixed train where passengers rode the cabboose?
