Passenger Trains > Amtrak RS3M questionsDate: 10/26/20 14:21 Amtrak RS3M questions Author: Appalachianrails Where were Amtrak's RS3Ms rebuilt? Dewitt, NY like Conrail's or New Haven?
Would an electrical diagram for a former Conrail RS3M be the same or at least very similar for an Amtrak one? Date: 10/26/20 14:44 Re: Amtrak RS3M questions Author: SD45X I would suggest googling the engine reporting marks and finding out its pedigree. Couple sites come up usually right away with info. That will answer most your questions before the electrical answer can be found.
Unless you give us the number:) Date: 10/26/20 14:46 Re: Amtrak RS3M questions Author: Appalachianrails I've already googled it before but still find conflicting information aboit its history.

That may help some. Diesel shop info, my phone wants to call instead of opening the links:( Whats the electrical problem? That it? Judging by descriptions, it's a DeWitt rebuild with the big hood . https://www.hebners.net/Amtrak/amtRS3.html The Altoona list doesn't include it:( My buddy informed me no two anything left the shops the same as far as wiring goes. Especially the number of years to finish them. So let me know the problem, my buddy is really sharp on wiring issues. Also control system if known will play a big part. EMD used their own on their rebuilds but I didn't see any mention of that on these as far as control/excitation. Pictures help too:) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/26/20 16:24 by SD45X. Date: 10/26/20 16:23 Re: Amtrak RS3M questions Author: train1275 My understanding is (and I could be wrong) is that Amtrak did this as a "New Haven Geep" in July 1981. It was transferred to Amtrak as a 244 Power straight RS-3 and the New Haven Shops turned it out in July 1981 as an EMD repower.
I don't know if it was a BC or C engine or what was done electrically to differ from a "Dewitt or Altoona Geep. It has the hood mod more like a Dewitt Geep than the cleaner look of the Altoona Geeps and oddly only has one stack, unlike the Dewitt's and Altoona's with two stacks. Can you tell I'm bored? https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4725025 https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,1376663 Cant seem to find anything on the New Haven rebuild. With that I would say no on the wiring diagrams matching. The single stack is a curiosity as well. Does it have the 12 cyl or is it an 8 cyl? Square or round inspection covers in the block? If Amtrak did it, it may have EMD control system as well. https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,1797322 Seems three were done by Amtrak. So really not a DeWitt Geep anymore. Anybody know the New Haven CT shops name? http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=149858 if you can track this one down , I think it was one of the three also. Might get some answers from the current owner. Edited 7 time(s). Last edit at 10/26/20 17:32 by SD45X. |
