Passenger Trains > Northbound Carolinian cancelled todayDate: 11/19/20 18:29 Northbound Carolinian cancelled today Author: GenePoon Amtrak cancelled the northbound Carolinian today.
80(19) was cancelled, no alternate transportation offered. Equipment was deadheaded Raleigh-Washington in its usual time slot, powered by AMTK 165, with its normal six cars running empty. Amtrak crew shortage caused the cancellation. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/19/20 20:22 by GenePoon. Date: 11/19/20 18:59 Re: Northbound Palmetto cancelled today Author: KV1guy GenePoon Wrote:

You once again have shown us that you really have no clue as to what you are talking about. The cancellation was called for because operating as 79(18), it was involved in a collision with a car that went around the gates and ran in to the side of the engine, ripping out the HEP lines between it and the first car. It was then impossible to get HEP supplied to the train with freezing temps later that night. Passengers were taken on to Wilson NC to be transfered to buses, and the train DH'd to Raleigh. Since the same equipment serves as the next days train (19), the train had to be cancelled and it DH'd today on north. There was never at ANY time a crew shortage for the normal handling of the train. The crew that brings it down as 79 is the same that brings it back the next day. How do I know? I was the Engineer on 79 involved in the mishap. Date: 11/19/20 20:23 Re: Northbound Palmetto cancelled today Author: GenePoon Thanks for the correction. I'll let the official who told me know the real story.

But y’all keep hero worshipping someone who feeds the narratives you want to believe instead of listening to the folks out in the trenches getting trains over the road six days a week. That’s a common problem in 2020.

Posted from Android Date: 11/20/20 03:36 Re: Northbound Carolinian cancelled today Author: andersonb109 Wow there are certainly some really hateful people on TO. Not everyone can have their facts correct 100% of the time. Look how many times inaccurate so called facts are reported in the news media as reporters trust what their sources say. Only to have to be corrected later. So Gene got this one wrong. So what? It's not a life and death issue. Like many others here, I find his posts to be very informative. These personal hateful attacks on TO need to stop. Try Twitter as an alternative. You will find plenty of hateful company there.

Being you can mark off for 3 days after a bad accident, who knows if that fits the narrative. I've worked with plenty who go right back when pressed by mgt, while others took the time off. Mgt always claims how short they are and we can't have a train stopped. So I watch Cowboy's jump thru hoops to keep the wheels turning, thinking they are saving the company and themselves. In the end, it's all politics....
Thanks Gene for your best efforts at reporting and lets not forget that Amtrak squelched the "A" report to hide things like this from the general population.... Date: 11/20/20 07:58 Re: Northbound Palmetto cancelled today Author: Dcmcrider PC1974 Wrote:

For what it's worth, Amtrak's "Amtrak Alerts" Twitter wrote it up as a "vehicle crossing accident" on 79(18) south of Rocky Mount and train terminated with "no alternate transportation." Similarly 80(19) blanked--"no alternate transportation." Paul Wilson Arlington, VA Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/20/20 07:59 by Dcmcrider. Sorry you had to go through that. Date: 11/20/20 10:45 Re: Northbound Palmetto cancelled today Author: ctillnc KV1guy, thanks for the explanation. I'm thankful that no crew member was injured. The question I'm about to ask isn't directed at you personally. Was adding an NCDOT F59 to the consist considered so that 80(20) could run as usual north of Raleigh? Wouldn't be the first time.

Date: 11/20/20 20:37 Re: Northbound Palmetto cancelled today Author: Dispatcher68 Being totally honest,I was told exactly what was mentioned above...the crew requested relief, another crew had to be utilized to move from the accident scene, and they had no crews that would be rested to run 80 back north in the AM. There was no mention of any damage until after the consist deadheaded back north to DC.
And from past experiences as a DS with Amtrak on my desk,I used to get more BS info and excuses, etc from their managers than I could handle some days...wrong crews, wrong consists, lies about crew availablity, you name it. They have that "need to know" crap honed to a fine talent.More than once I made 'em wait until I got correct soup before I let them move, and I took the delay on the head.If you want your Hiawathas and Builders to be on time, don't bullschitt the DS and the Chief! The crews out there were tops,it was the TM's and higher that had brown stains all over their threads. |
