Passenger Trains > Truckers Strike Again

Amtrak got victimized by Mississippi truckers... again.  A semi pulled out in front of 58 (20) yesterday at Johnstons Station, just north of McComb.  The train came through here about twenty minutes ago with a CN SD75I in the lead.

Jeez. Thanks for posting, I was wondering what happened.

City of New Orleans 58(20) with the AMTK 191 collided with a big rig near McComb, crippling the 191.  5 h 15m delay, CN 5751 was added ahead.  Relief engineer was called but that call was then cancelled.  Further delay of 2 h 45m at Jackson for a stalled CN freight ahead.  CN 5751 was swapped with the IC 3117 at Memphis, losing 19 minutes past the scheduled dwell time.   Train was 10h 15m late at Carbondale, now approaching Effingham, about 10 1/2 hours late.

Hard to tell if the train has lights and air conditioning.

I hope the Amtrak head end crew are OK.

         A broken windshiel should not cut off the HEP and all the lights and A/C or heat in the train.

My guess would be that the unit was running at least enough to provide HEP and maybe traction, but was illegal to lead due to broken headlights and windshield.

Without HEP, Amtrak would have been forced to terminate the train or send a relief unit from New Orleans.

The door indicator lights are still working in the picture so there should be some power.

Was everyone on the train OK. How about the engineer?  Was there gates  the crossing or did the semi just go around them.

It would if what tore the windshield up also tore up the HEP controls or managed to somehow damage other electronics like the HEP circuit breaker.

If it is the crossing I think it was, there are only crossbucks with no gates or flashers.  Earlier poster said relief engineer was cancelled, which to me suggests the engineer was okay to continue working.

Glad there were no fatalities.

The area around McComb MS seems to have a lot of grade crossing collisions.

I did a search and picked up a bunch of collisions and a few fatalities.

Wow at least a 7 car consist and only one P42? They don’t do that on the Chief!

Was CN 5751 an ex ATSF SD75 I ?

Not sure how CONO gets 7 cars and the Capitol Limited gets 4 cars. Even the Texas Eagle gets less than 7 cars now I believe with no Sightseer Lounge Car.

Perhaps related to CN requiring a minimum axle count on trains running in its territory?

Negative.  One of 175 SD75Is purchased new by CN between 1996 and 1999.  CN 5751 was delivered in October 1997.

7 car minimum on CN.  58/59 is often seen with 2 units, hence my previous question about back to back vs. elephant style.

393 / 390 (the Illini / Saluki roundtrip to Carbondale) often runs with Superliners instead of Horizon / Amfleet.  When I have bothered to note the actual consist I often see that a bunch of them are sleepers.  What I don't see anymore are the vintage bags.
