Train #51 left Cincinnati on time in the week hours of this morning, only to lose 4:56 before Connersville.

Does anyone know the story?

Thank you.

AmTwitter says #51 was delayed due to "disabled freight train" outside Connersville.

Apparently a Highrail truck rear ended Q361 last night and they were still dealing with that scene. No details on that incident yet.

Thank you for the info!  I do hope no one was seriously injured.

Did a bus go ot from Indianapolis to try and intersect with the routes of the southbound/westbound Texas Eagle, Southwest Chief, and Ca Zephyr? That's been done before......Course the Empire Builder connection is a bit tougher!!!! ETA for the Cardinal into Chicago is 2:30 pmCT.

CORRECTION, new ETA is about 6 hours late - or 3:55 pm!

Connersville IN Fire got a couple trucks stuck in the fields trying to get to accident sight. Ended up have to offload their extrication equipment onto ATV reach site. Driver was extracted and transported to hospital with multiple injuries. No report on condition. Prayers for him.

I wonder if the light on the EOT device was not working...

Very sad.

Also have to wonder what authorization the hirail operator had
(or didn't have) for the territory he/she was in.  But no sense in
speculating until investigation complete.  Most important thing
now is recovery from injuries.

Amtrak could have provided a substitute train set for #50 leaving Chicago tonight, Thursday, Dec 31, 2020? There's equipment available - perhaps not single level equipment. But Amtrak has operated MANY times Superliner equipment to ensure an on-time #50 got out. The Superliner Cardinal would operate to Washington DC, and then passengers would make a cross platform change to a NEC corridor train. It's certainly doable.....

Now the train gets to be late New Year's Eve and into New Year's Day in its meandering trek to NYP...........

#50 East shown departing 2’2” late. Hard to believe they couldn’t cobble together an on time replacement consist with all the surplus equipment.

As far as I know MW equipment is not equipped with PTC apparatus. Not to mention rear enders with PTC can still happen at restricted speed-20 mph or less on most roads. A lot of damage can be done at 20.

It's made up nearly 1.5 hours of lateness, and by Charlottesville, Train #50, the Cardinal is expected to be essentially on-time. Yes, very little freight traffic to deal with, but this could have went the other way too!!!

Even better now.  As mentioned earlier, 50(31) was 2 hours 2 minutes late out of Chicago and now only 16 minutes late out of Staunton, and already passed 51(1) with no delay.  Amazing.
