Passenger Trains > Amtrak lifts "one-person cab" restrictionDate: 01/09/21 07:24 Amtrak lifts "one-person cab" restriction Author: GenePoon Earlier during the COVID-19 pandemic, Amtrak restricted occupancy of operating cabs to one person if possible. Qualification rides were not permitted and a second engineer, where working, was to occupy the second locomotive cab where present. Federal and Governmental inspectors, RFEs performing check rides, host railroad pilots, and other instances as required for safety were permitted.
The restriction has been lifted effective January 8; with a limit of two persons in the operating cab. When two are in the cab, face masks must be worn. The applicable General Order does not mention whether the face mask must be worn while the employee is chewing food. //sarcasm// Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 01/09/21 12:34 by GenePoon. Although IIRC the six foot social distancing rule should be easy to follow once you are in and seated at the desks / engineer - fireman's positions.. I don't know anyone who does. But if you insist, you're supposed to discuss it ahead of time, not wait til the door closes to say "I'd like you to wear a mask."

Neither of them reduces the chance to zero. The simple fact is having two people in the cab will result in someone getting covid, and the company doesn't care.

What about the freight railroads which have have had 2 people in the cab since all of this started? Date: 01/10/21 23:22 Re: Amtrak lifts "one-person cab" restriction Author: PHall DevalDragon Wrote:

It's about what, eight feet between the engineer and conductor seats in a locomotive cab? What's the problem? According to the CDC masks not required if you're more then six feet away from other people. Date: 01/11/21 01:11 Re: Amtrak lifts "one-person cab" restriction Author: radar PHall Wrote:

According to the CDC masks not > required if you're more then six feet away from > other people. The guidelines have evolved over time. The CDC emphasizes "at least 6 feet," and they say masks are required in any work environment. Six feet is not an absolute, and in a cab with a pretty limited volume of air the risk is high. Exchanging air through ventilation or open windows probably helps. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/social-distancing.html Edited 1 time(s).
