Passenger Trains > Amtrak 30 & 48 are running late this morningDate: 02/16/21 02:27 Amtrak 30 & 48 are running late this morning Author: JPB As indicated in an earlier post below, the eastbound Capitol Ltd (#30) left Chicago a few hours late arriving the Elkhart Live cam at 0100, down 3 hours and 34 minutes. Not only were there several inches of snow with frigid single digit temps with 10+mph winds, a few boarding passengers thought #30 was #48 and were turned away. But fortunately the eastbound Lake Shore Ltd arrived Elkhart about 13 minutes later, down only 49 minutes.
Status update at 0520 - 0522: #48 is still following #30 by about 13 minutes across north central Ohio. #30 is now 4 hours and 28 minutes late and is due at Elyria at 0543 while #48 was due into Sandusky at 0522, running 1 hour and 19 minutes late. So few people traveling... Date: 02/16/21 06:53 Re: Amtrak 30 & 48 are running late this morning Author: sethamtrak If I was interpreting ATCS correctly, 30 sat at the Hammond-Whiting Station for nearly an hour.

------------------------------------------------------- > That is one short Cap Ltd. Darn. > > So few people traveling... Looks may be deceiving. It's a short Capitol Limited - YES. But not always true that "so few people traveling." In October this four car train set was hitting "sellout status" in both coach AND sleeper quite regularly with the tri-weekly schedule. the City of New Orleans as getting a second sleeper and Sightseer Lounge on most runs back then - more than the Capitol. All food service in the Cap was handled by ONE LSA out of the Cross Country Cafe / Sleeper Lounge. They could have put a Sightseer Lounge in the consist and just closed off the lower level. It would have helped to social distance people that did want to move about if they could. No sitting in the Cross Country Cafe, and even the LSA was picky about keeping the Sleeper Lounge clear, except if you were eating there. I was aboard TWICE with the sell-out (completely soldout) status - bedrooms and roomettes, plus what ever the allowance was for coach, it was sold out. It was a bit crazy! Course this train does a LOT of turnover at Pittsburgh. Amtrak should split the Capitol Limited at Pittsburgh and send one section to Harrisburg, and the other section to DC. It would gain much better utilization. It wouldn't be able to go east of Harrisburg, but turn it there and send it on back for a same day turn to re-connect after daily service is restored when the COVID battle is over. I've actually done an analysis where it could do a same day turn at Harrisburg and connect to go back West. Cross the platform change to a Keystone at Harrisburg - better than doing the connection at Pittsburgh if you ask me. The rail infrastructure at Pittsburgh would require some MINOR re-configuration to accommodate the split and merge. Would avoid the mis-connects and allow for a second frequency WEST of Harrisburg. Pennsylvanian can be timed to be an afternoon train eastbound and morning train westbound. Anyway - back on topic - occasionally a second sleeper was added to this four car Capitol Limited train and things were a bit better in Nov/Dec, but the spike in COVID during that time I think also kept people away so the four car consist was set back to the norm. But post-tri-weekly service, this is the consist planned on a regular basis for the Capitol Limited. Did it get bad-ordered? Typically Chicago does not keep extra Viewliner Sleepers - only Viewliner Baggage Cars and Viewliner Diners (Sleeper Lounges) that they can use to meet the axle count.

Sold out within the pandemic limited capacity. It is impossible to know how many people were turned away because Amtrak didn't add more seats. I think the image doesn't really show it too well though as it looks pretty similar to the Amfleet behind it in the lighting. We were booked in the Boston Sleeper but moved back to the New York sleeper as plans changed due to the weather.

Lake Shore also seemed to have a more "healthier train set" than the Capitol Limited. I find that the Capitol Limited can run with either a LOT of passengers or hardly any at all. It's a bit bizarre. Any time I've been on the train, it's always been a very busy train (Chicago to Pittsburgh at least). Any passengers that remain onboard after Pittsburgh (heading east) are typically going all the way to Washington DC. But then I do know some other folks that have been aboard when it only has a few passengers. Amtrak always reports the Capitol Limited at the bottom of the barrel.........And out of all Amtrak's trains, I think this train is more end point to end point, train but the PRIIA report didn't necessarily reach that conclusion....... I slept in Bedroom C in October 2020 (consist was as you see pictured here). Course a nice sleeping pill helped! I did finally get up at 5 am and waited I think till 6 am to get breakfast...... |
