Auto-Train 53 (15)
Author: Lackawanna484

The southbound Auto-Train is currently near Florence SC, about halfway through its trip. It should be pulling into Sanford FL about now. Several days of bad weather, trees down, ice storms, and a tornado have slowed the usual punctual train. Expected into Sanford about 5 pm today, so there will be daylight running in many unusual places.

The crews must be exhausted   don't know if this train set had a fresh OBS team start in Lorton, but the fast turn arounds mean little rest. Multiple days of fast turns are bad all around.

Very tired crews yes, however on the plus side, lots of overtime. I guess it all depends on the individual's personal circumstances. On NJT, most crews won't ever refuse more $$, but there seems to be a growing amount of them that really don't care about making money and will mark off before bad weather to avoid the long, tiring few days. Hence one of the reasons why NJ Transit runs a weekend schedule at the first sign of bad weather.

All OBS crews are fresh at Lorton; they turn at Sanford. A late arrival at Sanford usually turns in about 4-5 hours, which is close to their normal rest time there.

I knew the OBS staff started in Lorton, but I thought they did two turns.

Start in Lorton, turn at Sanford the next day, then go home for a few days on morning of day 3?

Amtrak is cancellingthe Auto Train out of Sanford and Lorton on Feb 18, 2021 to try and get things reset. Guess that was lightest day of the week to try and get things caught up?

Weather related, although this will enable them to catch up.
