Passenger Trains > California Zephyr Train 6 Service Disruption 17 Feb

Amtrak's train 6, the eastbound California Zephyr, was showing a traffic disruption west of Salt Lake City, Utah, at 5:00 AM, Wednesday, 17 February 2021.  What's going on-?

Major winter storms in the news - weather may have something to do with it?

looks like they turned 6 to become 5 at SLC

While it is a good storm this morning here in Utah, I’m surprised it would affect the Zephyr. And usually they turn in Reno instead of Salt Lake so I wonder if there is a problem west of here.

Amtrak's Track A Train shows #5 doing 57 mph with next stop Elko, NV.  Running 6 hr 57 min late.

One set of equipment did not go west Monday out of Chicago. Maybe one eastbound will be cancelled to balance the rotations back out. 

5(15) never left Chicago, so 6(16) turned in SLC to take it's place west of SLC to Emeryville.  I guess it was decided 6 could only get into trouble tomorrow in the Midwest.
5(15) will live to be 5(17) and the fax 5(15) will become 6(18) and all will be back in sync.

Oakland doesn't have an OBS Crew Base to staff a LD train, so storing a trainset wouldn't really help.  And such a set would probably just be underfoot anyway.

Amtrak's Twitter page had a post the other day that 6(16) would be terminated at SLC, with no alternate transportation provided east of there.  So perhaps that equipment was turned to become 5, which I believe had been cancelled out of Chicago on the 13th and/or the 15th.

Train 5 was canceled on the 15th but ran on the 13th. I was on 6(13) and we passed 5(13) just after Glenwood Springs. We didn't pass any other Amtrak trains between there and Chicago due to the tri-weekly and the cancelations out of Chicago due to the storms.

Just saw it on the Truckee webcam going west as No. 5.

JB - Omaha

#5 departed Truckee today at 16:14.  From what I could see on the Truckee downtown webcam, it appears to be a double consist, with baggage cars on both ends of the train.  Perhaps two sets of #5's equipment are being run to Emeryville in this movement?

So you get on a train in CA on your way to Omaha for whatever reason and get as far as Utah and Amtrak says 'time to get off, we're just going to stop here'.  'We may run another train in a few days if you'd like to take that one and get to Omaha at the end of the week.  Sorry'.????

The decision to turn the train in SLC was made before the day before the train left Emeryville.  No one on the train was under the impression it would go any further.
