Do they even have a trainset in position to run said trains due to the avalanche in Montana?

That sucks, I wonder how long it'll take for BNSF to clean that up!

Why can't they just use an 0-5-0 switcher to bring a new trainset where they need it?

Tonight's 8 (23) and 28 (23)'s trainsets made it through the avalanche they had on Marias Pass Sunday evening. The track has been open since Monday afternoon, but apparently someone blinked and they aren't running. No. 7 (22) is holding at Shelby tonight.

From Amtrak alerts on twitter:

Empire Builder Train 28 scheduled to depart Portland (PDX) on 2/23 is canceled due to debris blocking the tracks east of Shelby (SBY). Alternate transportation will be provided between PDX and Spokane (SPK). For reservation assistance please call 1 (800) 872-7245.

They seem to have east and west mixed up. I've only been out there once but I seem to recall Marias Pass being west of Shelby.
