Horn on Amtrak #163
Author: RuleG

I watched the eastbound Sunset Limited pull into and leave the station on the Tuscon, AZ railcam.  The horn, which sounded upon departure, was not like any other Amtrak horn I've heard before.  Anyone know anything about it?

I just had Amtk “Covid” # 19 the other day on #6. It sounded like a freight horn to me... Sooo, that’s what happens sometimes— there’s a horn “substitution”, and it ain’t an Amtrak K5La fo sho!

But the unit is back on the road and not sitting and that's what counts.

163 has a K5LA that is fouled and out of tune. Take it apart, clean up the internals, and it can sound great again.

Most locos I have been behind are out of tune for whatever reason.

If the horn is FRA Legal, they could care less what it sounds like.

They used to care for sure... When I hired on in the 80’s, they had an oscilloscope to help fine-tune the horns in the Chicago diesel shop!

They're too stupid to even maintain the 26L brake valves on the Cabbages. You expect them to clean horn trupets ? Hah.
