Passenger Trains > Horn on Amtrak #163Date: 03/04/21 19:04 Horn on Amtrak #163 Author: RuleG I watched the eastbound Sunset Limited pull into and leave the station on the Tuscon, AZ railcam. The horn, which sounded upon departure, was not like any other Amtrak horn I've heard before. Anyone know anything about it?

It sounded like a freight horn to me... Sooo, that’s what happens sometimes— there’s a horn “substitution”, and it ain’t an Amtrak K5La fo sho!

But the unit is back on the road and not sitting and that's what counts. Date: 03/05/21 11:46 Re: Horn on Amtrak #163 Author: Appalachianrails 163 has a K5LA that is fouled and out of tune. Take it apart, clean up the internals, and it can sound great again.

When I hired on in the 80’s, they had an oscilloscope to help fine-tune the horns in the Chicago diesel shop!
