The REAL California Zephyr
Author: photobob

Everytime I see a post saying the "Caifornia Zephyr" I cant help but flash back on the current Amtraks CZ heritage. The present day CZ doesnt even come close to what was one of Americas premier trains. Heres the real McCoy crossing Rock Creek Trestle in the Feather River Canyon in the late 60\'s. What a beautiful train. I have more WP photos on my website at:

Aw shoot Bob, the REAL California Zephyr had either Burlington Route F3s or E units on the point!

:-)

Burlington John

PS - nice shot!

It was a beautiful Train. Remember riding her in December before it came off. Nothing better than going yp the Feather River sitting in the third or forth dome.

I rode the last two years. Beautiful, but the A/C broke the second time. Made the dome pretty warm.
Howcome no one runs an excursion up and down the canyon?

Also, is there a bar/restaurant open in Keddy again?

the AOE is the only regularly scheduled train through the canyon.

No, Keddie isn\'t open, most cabins (and the hotel) are condenmed and those that aren\'t are rented out permanently.

If I were a Burlington man, I'd be proud too, as you are. But, you could not be more dead wrong about the CZ. The Burlington is where all that great mountain/canyon scenery ended. Or, in the other direction, one could say where the Burlington ended is where that great scenery started. CZ was never known for all the wonderful corn fields on the endless prarie. AA

Better was riding up the Feather River sitting in the dome of the observation car on train end. Which meant I (as a college junior) was riding in first class a year prior to its demise.
