Maybe they should just say what trains WILL be running..........I know it's a wide span storm, but clearly Amtrak's taking things off the road this time than having a debacle like last time in the South, regardless of how much rain, snow, and ice may be coming!

1950's magazine advertisement: "Weather or no, go New York Central."

Guess I don't understand why bad weather should lead to Saturday train cancellations along the NE Corridor given the pending storm won't arrive DC until mid-day Sunday and New York on Sunday evening.

"...out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our customers ..."

If you don't operate trains, you have no customers.

Over seventy years ago and before billions - trillions? - of Government spending on Highways and Air Travel infrastructure led Americans to vote with their feet and leave railroads to wither and die.

Given how Amtrak treated its passengers in Lynchburg a few weeks ago, this is probably the right decision

Thanks, Jimbo, for your summary.  I note that most of the cancelled trains make most of their runs on NS and CSXT with some originating/terminating on the NEC. Amtrak is responsible for operations on the NEC and most trains that operate only there are not cancelled.  To me this indicates that Amtrak does not trust NS and CSXT to operate Amtrak's trains during inclement weather.  Gerry

Amtrak and its partners do not want to be in the rail passenger business.  Any excuse for cancellation is valid in their eyes.

They'll find out the hard way that passengers are gonna quit buying tickets when service becomes this unreliable.  And once the passengers quit coming the ruse will be up.

I find it interesting that 29(14) ran and 29(15) will run (both leaving DC) ... the cancelled counterpart is 30(15) which will lead to two train sets being in Chicago for a few hours tomorrow.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. A day or two of planned disruption is better than stranded trains. But either way, posters with no skin in the game will complain.

Tough road to navigate, but Amtrak will lose some riders - it's an inevitable byproduct. Washington Post article said that Amtrak risks being seen, or regarded as irrelevant..

Because they got their butts spanked by the talking heads of the 24 hour news cycle over what happened during the last storm.

Amtrak was better than this as far as before Airline Boy came in, look back at that!

Looking back at the past fixes nothing. You need to deal with what's happening right now.

The advertisement is mostly still valid!  Service is still being operated on all former New York Central System routes.
