I used to live about 1/2 mile from this location. This type of accident occured frequently. As a young man, I called this underpass "The Stratford Can Opener".  Several years ago, the State installed a height detector on the South side that flashes a warning if it detects an overheight vehicle. The North side only had a sign that read "11ft. 1in", with flashing yellow lights. This truck was approaching from the North side, and must have been traveling fairly fast. The bridge itself is a Pony Plate Girder bridge built in 1905.

He should have went faster. Probably would have cleared the bridge.

No, that's what the excuse was for the run away in Colorado the killed all those people. Lots of crossings in the Carolina's are being marked in Spanish were trucks are always stuck on the tracks.

Not really.  Driver did not come out of the incident unable to reproduce or dead (unless dying of embarrassment).

Years ago, I was told by a former PRR/PC/AMT clearance engineer that "It'll fit the second time"...

I bet the driver lost their CDL no thanks to that!

One of the things I learned in my years as a CSX Intermodal rep (ie, gate clerk) from various truckers I dealt with is that there's a 'regular' GPS device available to anyone, but then there's a high-priced 'trucker GPS' that is 'bridge aware' and 'load limit aware', etc.  I even dealt with a number of truckers driving for a national trucking company that were provided GPS instructions by their home office...right out of Google Driving Instructions or something like that.  I had a couple of their drivers call me when 1/4 mile short of the ramp indicating they were looking at an 11'6" bridge per their driving instructions and needed to get the right way to our ramp.

It goes to show...you get what you pay for...
