That's pretty horrific.

"A suspect was arrested May 7, accused of spraying a man with a flammable liquid and lighting him on fire onboard an L Line train, causing extensive burn injuries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.  The attack was reported around 10:55 p.m. According to witness statements, the unidentified suspect, a female, possibly exchanged words with the man prior to the attack, but it appeared the suspect and man did not know each other and the attack was unprovoked, according to Ramon Montenegro, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau. The attack occurred near the Metro L Line Lake Station, Montenegro told SGV CityWatch."

Not in the story, but from someone that was on the train:

"That was on my train. I looked up in the reflection of the windshield and saw the the man on fire. Fellow patrons helped pat the fire off of him. After arriving at Lake Sta, ROC sent law enforcement and fire personnel. She was arrested and he was transported in fair condition. She was a homeless lady and he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."

probably schizophrenia.   Problem is that when they are on their meds, they are fairly normal people.  Off their meds, they are on aonther planet, and severly paranoid.  We've come a long way since the 1950's in dealing with mental illness, but there are still lots of issues and problems.

The nest thing the general public can do if confronted with someone who is off, is to walk away and not engage them.   Unfortunately, stuff like this happens, most of the time not on trains.   Its only posted here  cause it was on a train.  Its not really a train story/

I wish that those few here who just HAVE to go on  about social issues, could fine a more appropriate place for their discussions.

I didn't take this post as commentary on a social issue but more as an advisory to those on a forum who might be more likely to find themselves on a train than would a large portion of the general traveling public? To me the fact that it occurred on a train would seem to invite most folks to see it as a "train story" especially as something like this might be less expected to take place on an airplane considering the increased security practices and higher cost of admission. I do appreciate the solid advice on how best to handle such encounters. Finally, I will add I am new here and thus unaware of any members previous history.

FYI, this "meds instead of beds" program began when then Governor Ronald Reagan, ironically a train buff, closed most of California's mental hospitals in a budget cutting move.

Yup, after the ACLU fought to let most of the mental patients out so there were few left. Don't forget that part.

Transportation safety is one of the "prime directives" of all California Governors. If a California Governor has been falsely influenced by the ACLU, GOP, or other political action groups, it is still the California Governor's call.. Or as President Harry Truman was keen to say: "The bucks stops here."
